Quick Setup for Animated Light Shows: A First-Show Checklist

Sketch-framed title card for a first light show

A quick setup for an animated light show comes down to doing the steps in the right order: design your layout from a photo, let the platform work out your kit, register EZPlayer, test the lights, build a playlist and schedule it. This checklist walks through each step. It does not promise a setup time, because mounting and your home’s layout decide that. Use it to review the design, physical installation, downloads and playback before the first scheduled show.

What makes this a quick setup

EZRGB starts with your house photo and planned display. The designer estimates the lights, and EZRGB determines the equipment from that layout. That reduces the component-matching work a beginner would otherwise need to resolve. A useful first-show checklist still includes mounting, household power, network connections and an actual playback test.

Software and hardware: know which is which

Keep these roles separate when following the setup guide or describing a problem to support.

Software and cloud services:

  • The layout designer, where you build your display on a photo of your home.

  • The EZRGB cloud workflow, which prepares and delivers your show content for your layout.

  • EZPlayer, the application installed on the computer or supported device running your show. You can also manage it through the EZRGB website. It handles playback, playlists and schedules.

Hardware (what you hold):

  • The controllers, pixel lights and props listed for your kit.

  • The listed extensions and other kit equipment. House-specific mounting is excluded.

One detail worth getting right: EZPlayer uses Wi-Fi to sync. Every EZRGB controller, however, is hardwired Ethernet and never wireless. Plan your cable path accordingly, and do not expect a controller to join your Wi-Fi network.

Step 1: Design from a photo

The designer starts with a clear, straight-on photo of your house, taken in daylight so rooflines and openings are easy to trace.

  1. Upload the photo. Pick the one where the front of the house is least distorted by angle.

  2. Draw a box around something you measured. A door or a window works well because the edges are clean and easy to measure with a tape.

  3. Enter its dimensions. This scales the photo so the designer can estimate prop sizes and lengths from your drawing.

  4. Draw your rooflines, curves, doors and windows. Trace the edges you want to light. Curves are fine; you are outlining shapes, not entering coordinates.

  5. Review the light estimate. The designer estimates how many lights your drawn lines need.

Confirm that the box follows the feature you measured and that the entered dimensions are correct. The designer uses that reference to scale the photo and estimate lights; you do not need to manually measure every outline. Check the proposed layout against your actual home before installation, especially where perspective or hidden surfaces make the photo less clear.

Step 2: Let the platform determine your kit

You do not manually match controllers, pixel counts and power components. EZRGB determines the kit equipment from your layout. Review the resulting design and kit listing before ordering.

Two boundaries to understand before you order:

  • Kits include the equipment and extensions listed for that kit. They do not include house-specific mounting, such as clips, hooks or ties suited to your siding, gutters or shingles. Check the kit’s listing and plan your mounting separately.

  • Sequences and music are sold separately. Browse available lighting sequences in the RGB sequences catalog.

If you would rather start from a ready-made package, browse the plug and play kits or the plug and play props.

Step 3: Prepare mounting and power safely

The kit instructions come first. Follow them for how the equipment connects and how it is powered. Whether your household circuit suits the display is a separate question from the kit itself, and we do not state electrical capacity or cable limits for you. If you are unsure about an outlet or circuit, ask a licensed electrician.

The CPSC’s holiday-decorating guidance advises checking lights for damaged sockets, frayed wires and loose connections, checking outdoor-use labels and using GFCI protection for outdoor lights. It also calls for extension cords rated for their intended use. Follow the specific equipment instructions rather than applying a general string-light fastening suggestion to a heavier pixel prop.

Choose mounting suited to the prop and your home’s surfaces. Keep walkways clear and protect cables from damage. If a roofline or mounting position cannot be reached safely, arrange qualified installation help. Disconnect power before changing physical connections as directed by the equipment instructions.

Step 4: The EZPlayer cloud workflow

EZRGB kit setup requires the cloud workflow to download files and sequences and configure the show. You can begin registration before the controllers are connected, but physical playback needs the installed equipment ready. Follow the official EZPlayer cloud setup guide.

  1. Register EZPlayer. Install EZPlayer, choose Connect to EZRGB Cloud on first launch and select a permanent show folder. Follow the registration link or QR code to sign in and register the player.

  2. Allow the layout and content downloads. Open the Cloud screen and check the connection and content download status. Allow the layout and purchased content to finish downloading before testing. Keep Wi-Fi available for syncing.

  3. Connect and test your lights. Cable each hardwired Ethernet controller as the kit instructions describe, then run a test and look at every section of the display. Record any dark section, wrong color or unexpected response before proceeding.

  4. Create a playlist. In Playlists, create a playlist and add the songs you want. The official guide also supports playlist management through Manage Player on EZRGB. Schedules play playlists, so create at least one before assigning show times.

  5. Schedule and verify start and stop. Use the Schedule screen to choose the playlist, time window and applicable dates. Confirm on the installed display that playback starts and stops as intended; a saved entry alone does not verify the result.

We do not promise automatic recovery after a power cut or network drop. After any outage, check that the show is running as scheduled.

Step 5: Preview and troubleshoot before guests arrive

Run the full show once after dark, from the sidewalk or street, since that is where your audience will stand. Then work through a short list:

  • A section is dark. Note which section is affected and any status message. Follow the kit guide; disconnect power as directed before inspecting or changing physical connections. Ask support if the cause is unclear.

  • Lights do not follow the music. Confirm the right sequence is in the playlist and that EZPlayer finished its downloads.

  • The show does not start on time. Recheck the schedule entry and the start and stop times you verified.

  • Effects look cluttered. Review the layout and chosen sequence. If you want to add, move or remove a prop, update the design through the supported EZRGB workflow and confirm the change before testing again.

Keep a record of the first successful test

Note the player device, the show-folder location, the playlist and the schedule you verified. Keep the kit guide and a photo of the cable routes with those notes. If something changes later, the record helps you explain what was working before the change.

Do not delete or rearrange show-folder files as a troubleshooting shortcut: the EZPlayer overview warns about missing files. Record the error and contact support if content appears absent after syncing. Give yourself time for questions before inviting viewers.

Ready to build your first show

Start in the designer with a photo of your house, and let it tell you what your layout needs. When you are ready to order, our plug and play kits bring the controllers, pixel lighting and listed extensions together, and the sequence catalog has songs to match. Start at EZRGB.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need technical skills to set up an animated light show?

No programming is required. You upload a photo, draw your layout and enter the dimensions of a measured door or window reference to scale the photo. EZRGB determines the kit equipment, and the EZRGB workflow maps purchased sequences to your layout.

Does the kit include everything, including mounting?

A kit includes the equipment and extensions listed for it. It does not include house-specific mounting, such as clips or hooks for your siding or gutters. Check the kit listing and buy suitable mounting separately.

Are the controllers wireless?

No. Every EZRGB controller is hardwired Ethernet. EZPlayer uses Wi-Fi to sync with the website, but the connection to your controllers is by cable.

Are songs included with the kit?

No. Sequences and music are sold separately. After you buy them, sync them in EZPlayer, add them to a playlist and schedule the show.
